A square vase depicting the self portrait of Gwen John in a red dress.

The patterns around the vase were inspired by a 16th century Turkish tankard I saw in the Guggenheim museum in Lisbon.

This painting was inspired by a book I have about the artist Gwen John, born 1876, she was the older sister of her more famous brother Augustus John. Gwen John was born in Wales and studied art at the Slade school of art in London. In the early 1900’s John moved to Paris with some of her friends from the Slade where upon she began an affair with the famous sculptor Rodin. She died in 1939 in Dieppe, France.

Made from slab and coiling techniques using earthenware clay with slip, underglazes and clear glaze.

Measuring 20cms x 10cms
